Frequently Asked Questions
LABS
Why is regular blood work important at Source of Health?
Functional medicine focuses on proactive, personalized care. Regular blood work allows us to identify healthy parameters, catch imbalances early, and track your progress over time to optimize your health and wellness journey.
What are the 3 steps to getting great results from lab testing?
- Identify areas of improvement based on your lab markers.
- Make small, simple changes—don’t try to change everything at once.
- Track your results consistently—“If it doesn’t get measured, it doesn’t get done.”
When is the best time to get my labs done?
Between 8:00–9:00 AM is ideal, especially for accurate readings of cortisol and fasting insulin. Labs taken outside this window may be canceled.
Do I need to fast before my blood test?
Yes. Fasting is essential when testing hormones, blood sugar, cholesterol, liver, and kidney function.
- Eat a simple dinner the night before.
- Avoid alcohol entirely.
- Take medications as prescribed unless told otherwise.
- Do not take any supplements, especially Biotin (B7) for at least 2–3 days prior.
- Avoid exercise on the day of your test, as it may cause false elevations.
I'm on Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT). Anything special I need to do?
Yes. Blood levels should be checked midway between injections for consistent results.
- Example: If you inject on Sunday, get your labs Wednesday.
- If your dosing is Monday/Thursday, aim for Tuesday or Wednesday.
Also, TRT can raise red blood cell counts—regular monitoring is crucial to avoid complications.
What should I avoid before a PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) test?
Avoid strenuous pelvic activity such as biking, motorcycle riding, or ejaculation for 48 hours before the test. These can falsely elevate PSA levels.
How should women time their hormone testing?
If cycling regularly, test during Days 19–21 of your cycle, when hormone levels are at their peak.
- Just after your period, hormones are at their lowest.
- If you’re postmenopausal or irregular, timing is less important.
Will my insurance cover lab testing?
Most commercial insurance plans (excluding Medicare) cover basic labs, though high-deductible plans may require out-of-pocket payments.
We offer a cash-pay bundle of labs for under $300, compared to $1800–$2000 if billed through standard lab pricing.
PRESCRIPTIONS & REFILLS
Where are my prescriptions sent?
Standard prescriptions are sent electronically to retail pharmacies like CVS, Walgreens, Costco, or local supermarkets. You’ll be contacted when your order is ready.
Can I save money on prescriptions?
Yes! If paying cash, use GoodRx codes at the pharmacy to avoid overpaying.
How do I request a refill?
Most prescriptions include refills. Please contact your pharmacy directly to request one.
If you’re too early or too late, they may deny it—reach out to us if that happens.
What about compounded prescriptions?
We work with trusted compounding pharmacies to provide customized formulations (hormones, peptides, etc.). These are often not covered by insurance and are priced separately from your treatment plan at Source of Health.
Should I take prescriptions and supplements as directed?
Always follow the instructions provided by your Source of Health provider for both prescriptions and supplements.
